Guys come back home
Thanks for sharing, I will share this video to all my friends and family. Thanks also for the remembrance service, very heart touching
it is so very unfortunate that we don't always get what we want in life, i was born after the independence in 1987 but i have been reading and studying about Rhodesia. I was really a nice country for all. the love that you had for it was awesome. right now i think its time to bury the differences and reconcile so as to revive the good old days.. we are all Zimbabweans..
Are you for real?
I am sad to see you being questioned for real. Stick to your guns. There are 3 broad aspects to war that we young white Rhodesians did not then understand. Here is an extract from my memoir of those days due out later this year. "The Prussian Philosopher, General Carl von Clausewitz, who wrote from his experience in the Napoleonic Wars, breaks down the horrendous totality of war into elements that make even the Rhodesian case easier to contemplate. The totality of any war, he said, is a blend of three factors: The first and most subject to change and negotiation is politics, and this, he said, is the realm of governments. The second element of war is emotion. A mass of people must be riled up enough to risk death and kill each other. This is the realm of ideologues, propagandists, demagogues, and zealots. Third is the challenge of the game itself. This includes weapons, military strategies and tactics and the manly challenge of combat, the risks involved, and the depth of comradery amongst soldiers in battle. All of this is difficult for any who have not experienced it to ever understand, and all of it is the realm of military leaders. All three factors profoundly touched my life, although I couldn’t have defined them so clearly at the time.” I believe your critic only comprehends one aspect which is very real to all of us who fought -the challenge of the game itself.
A dear friend Aysha Moosa died last Thursday July 25 2024. I found out today that Aysha was buried here. I used to go to school with her at Jameson High School in Kadoma many years ago. I now live in Canada. Aysha was a very strong lady, who had determination, resiliance and was the best kind of good friend anyone could have had. I am humbled to have known her, although it was along time ago that I last saw her. I hope somebody who knew her reads this.
Beautiful words and obviously a good friend. My condolences
My old haunt the RF. I lived next door in the town houses and had to pop in everyday on my way home. Miss the old homeland. Been living in Cape Town since mid 80,s
Lovely to see. My family house also in Greendale, 20 Wiltshire Road. From 1970 Up to 1982
Hey Rodger great seeing you at the July Braai earlier this year (2023). It was heartening to chat to Churchill old boys outside my immediate circle of shamwaris and to rekindle loads of old memories. Thanks a ton for sharing the video and for your contribution at the Braai. Keep up the good work... 👍 PS I was at Churchill between 71 and 76 and had Jades for English and History. He wagered every Sprog in his class 5c that he could remember their names within the first month of starting at Churchill. He did very well, but I won 5c off of him which I dutifully spent in the tuck shop.
Good one .. thanks 👍 You should’ve bought a Bengal juice with that 5 cents ! Just in case you went to Admiral Tait Junior school I posted a video of that, too. Cheers
Takes me back more than 50 years. Thank you.
Thank-you for this glorious video. My dad took us to the Mermaid Pools as kids in the early 50s, & they are my fondest memories of Salisbury. It was lovely to see that the fun is still the same - the build up, the launch, the slide, the screams, the exit , they are all the same excitement, such fun. We even had tractor tubes in those days. My dad took us there because his dad had taken him there, that would have been in the 30s, so it is something to pass on. Thanks for the memories, it brought my old images to life - the rock slide is precisely how I remember it.
Why was this filmed in athens?
WELL D
What a shame there were no black soldiers present at the braai. I wonder how many there are living in the UK?
In my unit I would be very surprised if many of them survived till now, they would have been heavily targeted from ZANU/ZAPU and I would be astonished if there are any in the UK.
@@ggpp4898 Absolutely! I totally agree and understand, but it's a pity that one of the great black soldiers (or family) could have been there.
Incidentally, it was not by any means a criticism, only an observation.
@@robynsumpter7961 Yes but where would these black soldiers (heroes all) and/or their families have come from? I have been running a unit website for some 6/7 years and the site has never been visited by a former African serviceman, I also have a Facebook page specific to my unit and have some 450 members.....not one of them an African serviceman or family member. This where the unit comprised circa 5000 African soldiers.
@@ggpp4898 I agree. If there are any still around - which as it was pointed out, ZANUPF would have targeted them - they would all be madala! I have related this story on Facebook before, but I will tell the story again. I was living in Jhb, and in about 1984, a friend and I went out one night with a couple of ex-RLI guys to a pizza restaurant. One of the guys asked our waiter where he was from, to which he stood to attention and responded. 'I am from Rhodesia, I was in the Rhodesian African Rifles, so were all the other waiters here. We need guns, as there are more than 25,000 of us in Soweto who want to go and take our country back from Robert Mugabe!' The 4 of us were absolutely stunned! So sad.
Thanks, was excellent
Excellent piece....well done one and all!
How sweet 😍 😅
I was there in 87 I think. 16 with my mate Geri and Nicki and Mark Blankenberg
Hi Roger. I am busy putting together a RUclips video and part of it is showing Mermaids pools that I filmed in October 22. Would it be ok with you if I use parts of your video? I would like to show the part where you slid down the rock. I will obviously credit you for the clip. Thank you.
Absolutely A OK Bruce 👍… Good Luck with your Video, would be very lekker to see it once done, maybe post it on Facebook Group ‘Zim Vids’ as well … my email is rogerwilkinzim@hotmail.com if anything else is required. Cheers.
I went to Churchill from 1961 to 1966... Played rugby and then cricket but didn't like either... did a bit of athletics (javelin and discus) but what I really liked was basketball. During the time I played we were only beaten by Morgan High. At the same time I was also playing soccer for Lusitanos... the Portuguese club. Anyone remember the French teacher Monsieur Laresche or what happened to him?
6:02 de ja vu this . Towards first day of highschool. you'd spend an entire day shopping for uniforms😂. And for lower 6 as well
